What to wear to a Nigerian wedding as a guest
You got the invite, maybe a fabric colour, and not much else. Here is what a Nigerian wedding actually asks of a guest, in plain English.
First, find out if there is aso ebi
Aso ebi is the shared fabric or colour the couple picks for their people. If someone sends you a colour or a cloth, that is your cue - you are expected to wear it, or at least land close to it. If nobody mentions it, you are free to pick your own colours, and you lean festive rather than plain.
There are usually two events, dressed differently
The traditional ceremony is where heritage dress does the most work: agbada and kaftan sets for men, wrappers, lace and a gele or beads for women. The white wedding (church or hall) is closer to what you would wear to any formal wedding, though colour is still welcome. If you can only dress up for one, dress up for the traditional.
Men: an agbada or a clean kaftan set
You do not need to own three. One well-fitted embroidered agbada set covers weddings for years. If a full agbada feels like a lot, a dashiki set is lighter and still correct. Add a single strand of coral at the chest and you are done.
Women: colour, a headwrap, and one strong piece of jewelry
A pre-tied auto gele gives you the crown without the 20-minute tying battle. Pair it with one statement piece - either coral beads for the traditional or a crystal set for the white wedding. Let the fabric and the jewelry take turns, not compete.
A few things nobody tells first-timers
You will be on your feet and dancing, so comfortable shoes matter more than they look like they should. The party runs long, so heavy beads that feel fine at noon can wear on you by evening - check the weight beforehand. And spraying money on the couple is a compliment, not a rule, so do it if the moment feels right.
If you are not Nigerian
Wear the colour, wear the outfit, join the dancing. Showing up dressed for the culture reads as respect, not costume. Nobody expects you to get every detail perfect - the effort is the point.
